“Which fabric is better \u2014 polyester or PVC?” is one of the most common questions we get from canopy buyers. The honest answer: neither is universally better. They are built for different jobs, and choosing wrong in either direction costs you money \u2014 either in overpaid performance you don’t need, or in a canopy that wears out years too early.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Here’s how the two fabrics actually compare, based on what we see in production and in the field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Polyester canopy fabric<\/strong> (usually labeled 420D, 600D, 900D or 1200D) is a woven polyester textile with a waterproof coating applied to one side \u2014 typically PA, PU, or silver coating. It behaves like fabric: light, flexible, foldable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n PVC tarpaulin<\/strong> (usually measured in gsm, grams per square meter) is a polyester base cloth laminated or coated with PVC on both sides. It behaves more like a membrane: heavier, stiffer, and essentially a solid waterproof sheet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The “D” and “gsm” numbers matter here: polyester is graded by thread density, PVC by total weight per square meter. A 600D polyester cover and a 650 gsm PVC cover are not equivalents \u2014 the PVC is in a completely different durability class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Buyers comparing quotes sometimes treat the two fabrics as interchangeable \u2014 “this supplier’s canopy is 30% cheaper.” Check the fabric spec before comparing anything else: a 600D polyester canopy and a 650 gsm PVC canopy are different products serving different purposes, and the cheaper one may be expensive in the long run if your application is permanent outdoor installation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The reverse mistake happens too: paying for heavy-duty PVC on a promotional tent that gets used ten weekends a year.
